Before you can join this course, you will need to talk to a member of staff and do an initial assessment to make sure the course is right for you. We will use everyday situations like travel and transport, house and home, health and going shopping to learn new words and practise reading. This will help you to use and understand English you can see in application forms, letters (e.g. from a child's school, doctor, job centre, or landlord) and information in public places. This could help you to find a job, join in with local groups or activities, or feel more independent in your everyday life.
Course aim
This course will help to develop your reading skills. It leads to a City & Guilds Entry 1 Reading qualification.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Feel more confident using my English in everyday life
- Read common words, signs, symbols, and short texts about everyday situations
- Read for information in a range of situations, e.g. timetables, prices, letters
- Explain how different texts are used for different reasons (e.g. adverts, posters, news stories)
- Use punctuation (capital letters, full stops and question marks) to help you read sentences and short texts.

- What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom.
