A History of Turkey: Age of Empires

Modern day Turkey was previously known by such names as Anatolia and Asia Minor. Sitting at the cross roads between Europe and Asia it has been subject to influences and invasions from many ethnic groups. This course examines the history of this fascinating area from the Iron Age around 600 BC to the emergence of the Ottoman Turks around AD 1300. During this time people as diverse as the Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Turks and Crusaders all made their mark. Each of the 10 sessions will cover roughly 200 years of history.

Course aim

To examine the history of Turkey from 600 BC to AD 1300. The course will examine the legacy of the various empires which impacted on Asia Minor including Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders and Seljuk Turks

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Place the history of this region in a clear chronological framework covering a span of nearly 2000 years
  • Identify the legacy of each of the major players who impacted Asia Minor 600 BC - AD 1300
  • Assess the evidence from the archaeological record
  • Evaluate the social and religious changes during this period
