Day School: "American Artists in Britain"

Britain was an important destination for American artists during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This course will explore the reasons for this: what drew the artists and what led them to stay? And we will consider the importance of their contribution to British art. Key figures to be discussed will be Benjamin West, John Singleton Copley, James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent.

Course aim

To explore the work of American artists working in Britain between the 1760s and 1910s.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • outline the attraction of working in Britain for American artists.
  • critically examine and discuss examples of art produced by American artists in Britain.
  • outline the impact of two American artists on the British art world.
