Tate Modern was opened in 2000 in a converted power station, Bankside by the Thames in London. This spectacular space was designed to showcase some of the best modern and contemporary art in the world and it has held major exhibitions of international artists and hosted millions of visitors in is 20 years of operation. This course will concentrate on a handful of works from the collection, spanning the late 19th century through to the present day. We will look at a variety of artists whose work is characterised by some of the major experiments in art in this period, from the Impressionism of Degas's Little Dancer, to the futurism of Boccioni, the surrealism of Salvador Dali, the abstraction of Mark Rothko and the many examples of installation and conceptual art shown in the Turbine Hall. Themes in modern art such as the figure, personal expression, landscape and modern life will be explored through these works.
