Art History: Visions of Genius

Ref: C3747083

This course will introduce you to the painters of genius and renown from the early to late Renaissance period. We shall study some artists of lesser fame to set the scene for the periods covered. We shall look at the Northern Renaissance of Jan van Eyck, Durer and Holbein and spend some time on the major figures of Leonardo and Michelangelo. We shall discuss the impact these painters had, both at the time and afterwards, their influence upon each other and the rivalry this engendered, both between them and their followers. This will be done by a powerpoint presentation and discussion from us all.

Course aim

We will be looking at the seminal painters of the past: e.g. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Durer, Holbein and Titian. We will be discussing the meanings of their paintings, with patrons, local history and the social context in which they were created
