Female Suffrage: a County Perspective

Ref: C3747022

Women’s suffrage had been a hotly debated subject for over 50 years prior to the passing of the Representation of the People Act on the 6th February 1918. However, the vote was only extended to women over 30 and then only if they met the £5 property qualification. In this course we explore this journey from the Berkshire perspective, using local press coverage and suffrage literature to establish the progress of the movement within a contextual framework and follow its progress until legislation finally gave women franchise equality.

Course aim

The main aim of the course is to consider female suffrage in Berkshire and follow its progress through to female emancipation. In doing so we will develop a greater awareness of how the movement was perceived at a local level.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • No particular skills are necessary, just an interest in the subject and a willingness to learn. You will need to be able to access a computer in order to view course materials and complete course paperwork.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recount those protagonists involved with the movement, both at national and local level.
  • Discuss the main arguments surrounding female suffrage in the county in an informed manner.
  • Analyse the reaction of the county on the question of women's suffrage.
  • Identify any changes of opinion and support that may have occurred at county and local level during the campaign.

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

Session handouts will be posted on Canvas before each session and it would be useful to bring a hard copy with if you wish to make notes. In circumstances where printers are not available the tutor can make arrangements.
