The financial collapse of the New York Stock market in October 1929 and the Great Depression that followed, was one of the pivotal events of the twentieth century, which caused huge repercussions across the world. Using texts, first-hand accounts and visual sources, this short course will explore the origins of the crash during the ‘roaring twenties’, the nature of the crash itself, how and why it happened, and why historians regard this episode as a turning point in 20th Century history, and how the effects of the Crash still reverberate today.

Course aim

The Wall Street Crash in 1929 was one of the pivotal events of the twentieth century, which had global repercussions. Using texts, visual and documentary sources, this course aims to develop knowledge and comprehension of its historical importance.
