The Darent is a river of delights – not just passing through a delightful landscape but giving delightful insights into history and even pre-history. This tour along the river from its source to its confluence with the River Thames takes us through Samuel Palmer’s “Valley of Vision”, delightful villages, touching the history of Kentish people and our industrial past.

Course aim

• Develop appreciation of Kent’s social and economic history by visiting places of cultural interest along the Darent Valley • Develop appreciation of the different landscapes of the Darent valley • Develop knowledge of Kent’s industrial past

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Locate the source of the River Darent.
  • Name three key industries associated with Dartford.
  • Give two examples of clues to early settlement in the Darent Valley.
  • Briefly describe the association of an English painter with the valley.
  • Briefly describe the link between local geology and the characteristic vernacular architecture of the valley.

Jonathan Fenner originally qualified as an architect working for many years in private practice. Present day. Jonathan works as a qualified Blue Badge regional guide working mainly in Kent and Sussex. He is also a qualified City of London guide.
