Conflict in the Middle East between (and within) national states, plus the intervention of outside powers, continues to produce war and destruction – and new waves of desperate migrants fleeing discrimination and suffering. However, there are shifts in the aims of outsiders and major realignments of local states into competing blocs. Cross-cutting such political developments are familiar rivalries between groups defined by ethnicity, religion or socio-economic class. What sort of future is all this likely to produce?
