Latin For Pleasure - Intermediate

Ref: C3680315

Come and learn Latin in a friendly, supportive and stimulating group. We shall translate a wide range of extracts from Latin literature aimed to give students the skills to become independent readers of Latin. Some of the Latin will be adapted from the original to make it accessible to students but extracts of unadapted Latin will also be given. Each week some aspect of grammar and syntax will be explained and practised. All students will have plenty of opportunities to translate, discuss and benefit from the wide range of insights provided by all the members of the class. Wherever possible we will consider the impact of Latin literature on modern European society and culture and its links to modern debates.

Course aim

To promote enjoyment of reading classical Latin literature and to enable students to become independent readers of Latin.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This is an intermediate course for students who have previously learnt Latin to at least GCSE level or equivalent. The tutor is happy to give advice on whether the course is suitable.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a core vocabulary of about 800 words
  • Demonstrate increased confidence in translating Latin prose (adapted and unadapted)
  • Demonstrate increased confidence in translating Latin verse
  • Demonstrate a greater awareness of the context in which Latin was written and its continuing relevance today.
  • Demonstrate greater skill in translating from English to Latin (optional)

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

Students will find it very useful to have their own dictionary and grammar. The tutor will be happy to advice on the choice of these.
