This course will look at the history and contributions of Africa, African women and men from the continent and in the diaspora from ancient to modern times. The course is a basic introduction to African history so will mainly focus on key pre-colonial African civilisations. The course will cover African empires from different parts of Africa and will also question the ethnicity of the ancient Egyptians. The contribution of women throughout history is also a big part of the course. This course is based on the research of many well known authors of African heritage as well as European sources. We will primarily draw on the work of researcher, teacher, and author,Robin Walker.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to familiarise learners with the achievements of women and men of African heritage. This will be done by focusing on ancient African civilisations, and the often hidden contributions of a few significant African women.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Appreciate the importance of African history to world history, and its relevance today
  • Recognise the key factors in the rise and fall of several key African empires
  • Understand the key factors in the metamorphosis of several insignificant ancient villages, into vast empires, with global influence
  • Appreciate the contributions to African and global history, of several significant female figures from ancient times.
  • Recognize the hidden contributions, of women and men of African descent, in the fields of Science, Invention, discovery and technology.

When We Ruled by Robin Walker is the recommended book, but it is not essential. Other helpful books are: The Destruction of Black Civilisation by Chancellor Williams and How Europe Underdeveloped Africa by Walter Rodney
