Family History Online

Ref: C3680303

To briefly ensure students know the basic methods of building and recording a Family Tree. Sources, that can also be used for House and Local History, will be introduced in chronological order with special reference to Yorkshire records online. Often referred to as “God’s own county” Yorkshire has a special place in many people’s hearts, from current residents to those all over the world with historic connections. For Family Historians there is an amazing amount of material online focusing on Yorkshire collections. However it’s important to remember that Archives, Libraries and Museums situated in the county also house records of national interest. This course will bring together a wide range of sources, perhaps to be used in the future and cover an extensive date range. Develop and discover Ideas for research opportunities for those with and without Yorkshire ancestors.

Course aim

To briefly ensure students know the basic methods of building and recording a Family Tree. Sources, that can also be used for House and Local History, will be introduced in chronological order with special reference to Yorkshire records online.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain the benefits to be gained by using Local Registrars indexes, identify which are online and list the coverage for two places of interest
  • Specify the earliest known start date of Registers for four Parishes and record which Ecclesiastical probate jurisdiction they fall within
  • Work down through the pages of GENUKI to Gazetteers, report on surnames still in the area on the 1881 (may 1921?) census
  • Demonstrate having search The National Archives Discovery catalogue for a region by describing the type of archives they list
  • Confirm if any of your surnames or places appear in The Cause Papers and / or Archbishops Registers Northern Way project

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

It would be helpful if students have begun to tentatively sketch out a skeleton tree though brief guidance will be given.
