The late Pre-Raphaelites provided late Victorian society with the means to explore, imaginatively, the relationship between the sexes in a way that liberated them from the constraints of their time. This course will continue to study the following themes - William Morris and Burne-Jones' 'Dream of an Earthly Paradise' Female Pre-Raphaelite painters Ladies of Shallot La Belle Dames Sans Merci Themes such as 'The Knight and the Lady' It is not necessary to have attended the previous course and beginners are welcome.

Course aim

Later Pre-Raphaelitism's engagement with contemporary concerns functioned largely by projecting the protagonists depicted into a romanticised world; by this means later Victorian preoccupations could be outplayed imaginatively.

  • appreciate the significance of this large body of work to the society of its time
  • be more familiar with the artists and their distinctive approaches to their subjects

  • see the way the art contributed to the changes in society at this time
