Practical Fashion - Fastenings and Finishing

During the course, you are required to provide your own materials, you will need a variety of notions and fabric - please read below in the 'is there anything I need to bring' section. You will need to have basic sewing machine skills. It is essential that you produce the samples for the course. The compiled samples will be a reference file for you for future projects. You will construct samples following step-by-step demonstrations. You will explore - Buttons and buttonholes - Zips - Waistbands - Hook & eye, hook & bar, eyelets, and press studs - Velcro - Bias binding - Facings - Hand stitching You will need to photograph your progress throughout the course and record it on a Padlet board.

Course aim

This is a practical, sample-based course exploring fashion fastenings and finishings.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • - You will need to have basic sewing machine skills. - You need to log onto canvas for your zoom link and resources. - You need to set up a Padlet board to record your learning. You will have tutor support with this.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify a variety of fashion fastenings
  • Identify a variety of fashion finishings
  • Construct samples following step by step instructions
  • Explore a variety of hand stitches

You will need - Sewing kit and sewing machine - 1 meter Mediumweight fabric, 1/2 meter mediumweight fusible interlining - Concealed zip, standard zip - 5 Buttons including flat and shank - Petersham - Hook and eyes, hook and bar, eyelets, press studs - Elastic - Velcro - Bias binding
