This course will explore aspects of the life and work of Leeds artists John Atkinson Grimshaw. As well as including a range of the evocative moonlit scenes which Grimshaw is best known for & achieved commercial success with, we will discover the other less familiar aspects of his work. Fully illustrated with discussion.

Course aim

To consider the different aspects of the life and work of John Atkinson Grimshaw, comparing his more familiar moonlit scenes, with figure orientated scenes & daylight landscapes.

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Contribute to constructive discussion about the material studied.
  • Analyse and discuss a wide range of examples of paintings, making comparisons/contrasts.
  • Understand the background of the artist Atkinson Grimshaw.
  • Consider the wider context of the material studied.
