Archaeology of Lincolnshire (part II) with Simon Tomson

The course will look at Lincolnshire's archaeology, covering: - Roman invasion, creation of a province, Romanisation (government, taxation, coinage and the market economy), Kirmington Fort, Lincoln Colonia, Hibaldstow Town); - The end of Roman Britain - villas (Winterton, Sudbrooke, Wroxby, Horkstow, Norton Disney). -The arrival of the Germanic Saxons, their settlement, artifacts and art. -Viking raiders and settlers, artefacts, art and place-names. -The Saxo-Norman feudal system, castles, villages, fields and artefacts. All the above will be covered in informal, slide-illustrated lecture-style presentations at which discussion will be encouraged. The tutor may be able to provide some artefacts for class familiarisation and examination.

Course aim

This 6 week course will continue to introduce students to the Archaeology of Lincolnshire. This term we shall be dealing with the historic period from the Roman conquest to the feudal Middle Ages, including the Anglo-Saxon Migration & Viking Conquest

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • This course is a continuation but is self standing in subject matter.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the mechanism of the Roman conquest.
  • List which aspects of Romanisation can be detected in the county.
  • Discuss the current models which describe the Germanic settlement of Eastern England.
  • Decide which of the reasons for the Viking presence in England was the most important.
  • Show which aspects of Saxo-Norman feudalism persist within the county today.
