History: Hang or Hide - The Tudors, social change and their Catholic subjects

Ref: C3680194

Before the Reformation everyone in England and Scotland was Roman Catholic. By 1603 Catholics were a suspected minority who had to tread carefully. How did this happen? Were suspicions justified? What measures did the Catholics resort to to continue to practice their religion secretly and what measures did Elizabeth's spymaster Walsingham adopt to keep her safe? Come along and consider all these issues with an in depth look at the problems of the late Elizabethan age which fuelled suspicions; the Armada and the prospective succession of Mary Queen of Scots, not to mention the Catholic families and priests themselves for whom the choice was often one of 'hang or hide'

Course aim

A look at the disruption caused in English and Scottish society by the Reformation culminating in the issues which dogged the latter years of Elizabeth's reign; the Armada, the Catholics and the succession.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the unrest caused in England and Scotland by the Reformation.
  • Explain why change did not happen overnight. It was gradual and not all accepted it.
  • Describe the issues which dogged Elizabeth's later years; the threat from Spain, the succession and changes in society generally.
  • Outline the measures taken by the Catholic population to continue to practice their religion and compare how they were treated with the treatment of other minorities throughout history
  • Take opportunities to research the situation at the time in your part of the country

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

No prior knowledge is assumed but you might like to do some preliminary research concerning the period on the internet or by reading one or more of the books which will be detailed in a list for suggested further reading for class members. This is optional.
