Art Appreciation: Artists Coastal Colonies

This course will explore the development of some of the coastal artists' colonies in Britain in the late 19th century & the context the paintings were produced in. There will be a particular focus on Staithes and Newlyn, with other colonies covered including St. Ives & Cullercoats. Fully illustrated with discussion.

To explore the development of some coastal artists' colonies in Britain in the late 19th century & understand the context the paintings were produced in.

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Contribute to constructive discussion about the material being studied.
  • Analyse a wide range of examples of paintings.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the background of the artists & the development of the coastal artists' communities.
  • Explain the significance of the work produced in these colonies, from both an artistic & socio-historical perspective.
