This course will explore the development of some of the coastal artists' colonies in Britain in the late 19th century & the context the paintings were produced in. There will be a particular focus on Staithes and Newlyn, with other colonies covered including St. Ives & Cullercoats. Fully illustrated with discussion.

- Contribute to constructive discussion about the material being studied.
- Analyse a wide range of examples of paintings.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the background of the artists & the development of the coastal artists' communities.
- Explain the significance of the work produced in these colonies, from both an artistic & socio-historical perspective.
