This talk reveals a number of ‘wicked plants’ in our gardens and includes; A look at some commonly known offenders, some beautiful plants with a wicked hidden secret, poisonous plants which could help our health and in our old age, misused plants which generated trade and have inspired poetry and some specimens which can really challenge our sense of smell. We will take a look at some of the well known culprits, then look at some lesser known plants with a hidden secret. This also considers plants which have had an impact on history through misuse and a few plants that have some of us running for the smelling salts. The talk ends on reviewing a few of the ‘bad guys’ which have now made a positive impact on medical science.
Course aim
This session takes a look at some of our garden plants which can kill, intoxicate, irritate or otherwise offend. This includes some commonly grown ‘wicked’ plants, some surprises and a whole family of plants to be wary of !
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Identify at least one of these 'wicked plants' that may be growing in my own garden.
- Have a better understanding of the plants that I know to be poisonous.
- Identify one or more plants that I didn't know were a danger in a garden.
What else do I need to know?
A notebook would be useful if you would like to record some of the points raised during the talk and the group sessions. There will be opportunities to share any additional information with the group.
