History: Characters Who Made Plymouth Great with Alison Jones

This course will explore and discover the effects a wide range of characters had on the development of Plymouth. From Sir Francis Drake and the influences he brought as mayor to Professor Abercrombie's influence on the post -war reconstruction of Plymouth. We will search out the true characters who gave Plymouth its spirit and independence in the English Civil War, in its naval heritage and those involved in the creation and merging of the three towns that came together to form the city of Plymouth as well as more modern influences which has helped to make Plymouth the city it is today.

Course aim

Do you know why Sir Francis Drake was so important to Plymouth or that Napoleon was once the star attraction in Plymouth Sound? This course will help you to find out more about the characters who helped to mold Plymouth into the city it is today?

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify a range of characters who have influence the development of Plymouth.
  • Know that Sir Francis Drake was influential in the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
  • Discuss the impact a range of characters had on the City of Plymouth.
  • List key events in the history of Plymouth.
