Discover the Bude Canal

Ref: C3533220

The Bude Canal was built in 1823 to enable the transportation of unusually mineral rich sand from the nearby beaches, to fields inland for use as a fertiliser. The challenge was overcoming a steep hill, 433 foot above sea level and for this tub boats were used, winched up a series of inclines. The talk will cover the history of the canal, the challenges it faced, its partial closure and restoration, as well as highlighting some of the original features that can be still be seen today.
