Powerful witch, exotic outsider, unnatural mother: stories from the ancient and modern world about Medea highlight our fear of the unknown. In this session, we will look at representations of Medea in ancient and modern culture to uncover the influences on our perceptions of her, and ask whether she’s more sinned against than sinning.

Course aim

An introduction to representations of Medea, from ancient Greek myth to modern culture.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn more about Medea in ancient myth.
  • Find out about her representation in modern culture.
  • Consider some of the influences that have shaped her cultural representation.
