The Natural History of Trees and Woodlands

Britain has a relatively small area of native woodland, the areas that remain are some of the most biodiverse habitats in these islands. The course will investigate the complex ecology, the plants, animals and fungi that are a key aspect of their nature. Discover the history of our woodlands and the uses man has made of them in the distant past and the present day. During the course you discover what efforts are being made to conserve woodlands, the major threats and possible impacts of climate change.

An introduction to British trees and the wildlife they support.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Name 10 native tree species found in the British Isles
  • Describe the threats to woodland ecosystems in the UK
