Anthony Trollope: The Pallisers- Books 2&3 Phineas Finn & The Eustace Diamonds

Ref: C3533108

This course will be looking at the second and third novels in the Palliser series of novels by Anthony Trollope. Following a course in 2020 that looked at the first novel in the series, ‘Can You Forgive Her’, but it is not essential to have attended that course in order to join this one, the novels are linked but do, also, stand alone. You will study the novels in detail and consider their social and political context, split over two six-week sections with the first six weeks focusing on Phineas Finn and the second half looking at The Eustace Diamonds. They are both novels of significant length but split over six weeks each should make the reading schedule very manageable.

Course aim

This course will study the second and third novels in Anthony Trollope's Palliser series: Phineas Finn (1869) and The Eustace Diamonds (1872).

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • consider the novels studied in their social and political context.
  • understand literary techniques such as narratorial voice, imagery, characterisation, plot, exposition, foreshadowing, symbolism, flashbacks.
  • make connections to other novels by Trollope - tutor led if necessary - links will be made to his wider writing.

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

It will be necessary to have copies of the novels to hand for the sessions. A reading schedule will be sent out in advance of the course starting so it is not essential to have read both novels before the start of the course.
