Shakespeare and Music Day School

Ref: C3128959

There is probably no other writer who has inspired more music from composers of widely differing nationalities than Shakespeare. Examples of opera, incidental music, symphonic poems and song settings are almost overwhelming in number. It is one of the paradoxes of Shakespearean music that some of its finest examples had no connection with the theatre, and were written by composers who knew no English. During the day we will explore some of the different examples ranging from Mendelssohn and Berlioz to Tchaikovsky and Verdi plus lesser-well known examples including modern settings. Characters such as Hamlet, Romeo, Lear and Falstaff all find representation in sound. Come and discover through sound and stage.

Course aim

We will explore examples of music inspired by Shakespeare's dramas, ranging from Mendelssohn and Berlioz to Tchaikovsky and Verdi, plus lesser-well known examples including modern settings. Come and discover the variety in both sound and stage.
