Introduction to Family History

Students will start recording family history and be introduced to standard terms and methods used by family historians. These foundations will then provide a basis for further learning into methods and sources that enable individuals to develop their family tree.

Course aim

To introduce the basics of recording and researching family history.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the difference between Genealogy and Family History
  • Give reasons why researching family history can be a valuable activity
  • Draw a family tree using common symbols
  • List the common sources of information used in family history research
  • Plan on what to do next and to progress your own research

You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You will need a personal email address to join the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas
