How Modernism Works

The aim of this course is to comprehend and enjoy the developments of Modernist art after 1945. The course provides brief surveys of the preceding one hundred years but focuses attentions on examples of paintings. Examples for consideration will be drawn from the work of Anni Albers, Willem De Kooning and Joan Mitchell, Agnes Martin, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and Peter Lanyon, Jacob Lawrence, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and Paula Rego, Richard Hamilton, Jasper Johns and Gerhardt Richter. The course will suit those taking an interest in Modernist art for the first time and also provide the opportunity to close-view selected paintings for those wishing to refine and develop their understanding and viewing skills. Supplementary reading is provided for those participants who are interested to explore the material discussed in the group sessions. A detailed calendar indicating topics and close-views for each session is provided at the start of the course.

Course aim

The course will provide a good basis for enjoying and understanding many aspects of Modernist art, particularly in painting produced in Britain, Europe and the USA as it was developed after 1945.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a basic vocabulary to describe visual works of art.
  • Recognise the functions behind the production of different kinds of painting.
  • Recognise traits of a period style from the works discussed.
  • Identify extrinsic and intrinsic content of a visual work.
  • Recognise the historical context for a visual work in the period discussed.

The course uses a selection of images and written documents online. The course is delivered at live online sessions making use of the papers participants are encouraged to read in their own time.
