Autism is a lifelong condition that affects around 1 in 100 people in the UK. It affects how a person communicates, relates to others and makes sense of the world around them. This introductory online session is aimed at anyone who would like to develop an awareness of autism. The session will cover a brief history of how autism has come to be defined and the common difficulties faced by people with autism as well as examining some of the strengths of people with autism. You will also explore how to support someone with an Autism Spectrum disorder and where to find further advice.

Course aim

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for residents of the North of Tyne Combined Authority - Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • State at least one Autism Spectrum Disorder or Condition
  • Know one fact and one myth about Autism
  • Identify 2 common characteristics of Autism and how support can be offered for these.
  • Understand at least one possible explanation of Autism and look at the diagnosis process
  • Identify 2 sources of where to find further information and support

Enrolment Conditions

This course is funded by the North of Tyne Combined Authority but is also open to residents of other areas.

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you enrol. Please check the details below to ensure you meet the basic eligibility critiera:

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2021
  • You declare that the address you provide is correct and that you will provide evidence of this and your eligibility to live and work in the UK
