Pilates is a series of dynamic stretching bodyweight movements that are excellent for developing muscle awareness. The course will follow a progressive program of pilates, designed to strengthen and stretch the body and has been proven to help mental health. The course will follow a program allowing the learner to work at their own pace, strengthening and progressing the exercises to suit their body's needs. The tutor will introduce the key principles of pilates, which will target various parts of the body: e.g., legs, arms, glutes, core, obliques and upper back. This course will also help you to recognise and address the postural issues which can result from extended use of computers etc., for online workshops or in the workplace.

Course aim

This course will implement pilates to strengthen weak and misfiring muscles that lead to bad posture and postural pain

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • It is a progressive course and caters to all abilities from beginner to intermediate. Choose the exercise that is best for you, with explained watchpoints and tactile feedback queues.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn how to exercise safely with Pilates
  • Submit your health and wellness questionnaire digitally through an online platform: Canvas
  • Use of body awareness through pilates for the learner to self assess their own posture, eg when accessing digital courses online
  • Use of pilates to strengthen key postural muscles to prevent pain and discomfort with maintaining correct posture, for example with correct office equipment during digital workshops or in the workplace.
  • Use of pilates to bring awareness to the key muscles that are often weak or not firing correctly, which can result in bad posture and, therefore, pain through bad posture when using digital platforms.

What else do I need to know?

Wear loose bottoms: should be able to squat and move the leg freely. Mat or towel on the carpet. Cushioned mats are comfier than yoga mats for pilates. You want these extras: chair, band, light hand weights, cushion, towel, block. (These can be supplemented with home items.)
