Come along to gain confidence and the sewing knowledge to sew your own projects . Learn how to successfully follow a paper pattern. Use a basic sewing machine and basic hand stitches. Sew together fabric. Insert a zip or other detail. Adding darts or piping for cushions.

Course aim

Learn basic sewing skills, using hand and/ or machine; using fabric and paper patterns to create individual projects to build up your sewing skills.

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Gain knowledge of the symbols and instructions on a paper pattern and how to follow them.
  • Learn how to thread and use a basic sewing machine.
  • Select your own project to measure and demonstrate the perfect seam allowances and add other features such as Inserting a zip, darts or adding piping for cushions.
  • Help and support each other in the classroom working in a tidy and safe manner.
  • Know the health and safety steps you need to follow when using a sewing machine, hot irons and sharp tools.

Basic materials will be provided and there are scissors, pins and tape measures available. You will need your own fabric for the projects you decide on.
