Painting and Drawing - Inspired by Northumberland

Hosted in one of Northumberlands beautiful villages-Whalton, the course will explore several periods of history and specific sites of cultural interest in Northumberland, some celebrated and others more underground. Inspiration will be wide and inclusive and involve recording using sketchbooks and photography. Rock Art in Northumberland,, historic houses and the art collections they hold, and contemporary artist practices will be approached. Following an introduction to basic creative materials and techniques, learners will be invited to play, practice and achieve drawing and painting skills that will be demonstrated in a studies and/or a finished piece of work. The course will build and support individuals confidence, knowledge and skills whilst recognising how the regions cultural landscape and history are absorbed and reflected through the practice of drawing and painting.

Course aim

The course will inspire learners to explore and interpret the historical and cultural landscape and buildings of Northumberland through drawing and painting.

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for residents of the North of Tyne Combined Authority - Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand knowledge of materials and methods used in painting and drawing both traditional and unorthodox
  • recognise key regions of cultural history in the Northumberland area.
  • To produce a series of studies/works which explore Northumberland.
  • To discuss ideas that challenge and motivate the creative process of drawing and painting.
