Three Feminist Novels 1899, 1928, 2019

The course will address feminist and gender based literature as a literary and social force, focusing on three ground-breaking works that have helped to define the genre and inspire writers and readers alike. We will spend two weeks discussing each of the books: Kate Chopin, The Awakening (1899) a landmark in early feminist fiction; Virginia Woolf, Orlando (1928) extraordinary “biography” of a transgender person; Bernadine Evaristo, Girl, Woman, Other (2019 Booker Prize winner)

Course aim

We will explore in detail three ground-breaking novels by women - Kate Chopin, Virginia Woolf and Bernadine Evaristo - to discover both the roots and fruits of feminist literature.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This is an advanced course for students with experience and skills in this subject
  • You will need to read each of the novels and be prepared to discuss them in detail within the wider context of feminism and gender politics.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • analyse and discuss in detail each of the three novels
  • understand and appreciate the place of these three works in the feminist context
  • identify key issues in feminist and gender writing
  • make links between the three novels and other women's literature you may have read

You will need to have all three novels by the start of the course. Any further relevant material, such as reviews and guides, are also welcome. Some will be provided on Canvas.
