Get Ready for ESOL Level 2 Reading

Before you can join this course, you will need to talk to a member of staff and do an initial assessment to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464. In this ESOL course you will start to develop the reading skills you need at Level 2. You will practise using different reading strategies to extract meaning from a wide range of different texts, including texts where the meaning is not always obvious and will need to be inferred. You will also start to develop your critical reading skills by learning about how writers use language, such as persuasive devices and layout features, to achieve a specific purpose.

Course aim

This course will help you to develop your confidence and skills in reading in English at Level 2. It will help you get ready to move onto a City & Guilds ESOL Level 2 Speaking and Listening accredited course in future

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use different reading strategies to find and obtain information, e.g. skimming, scanning, detailed reading
  • Use inference to derive meaning from texts
  • Identify the different layout and language techniques writer’s use to influence the reader
  • Recognise the tone of a text
  • Recognise phrasal verbs, idioms, and collocations when reading

This course is funded by the Greater London Combined Authority but is also open to residents of other areas.

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you enrol. Please check the details below to ensure you meet the basic eligibility critiera:

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2021
  • You declare that the address you provide is correct and that you will provide evidence of this and your eligibility to live and work in the UK
