On this course you will learn step-by-step to design and make different dress making projects, such as a dress, blouse, trousers, or headscarf. You will learn to take body measurements and calculate fabric quantity. You will learn / improve your hand-stitching and use of a sewing machine, understanding more fully how to manage a machine. You will learn techniques such as pleating, piping, button-holes, pattern repeat and hemming. You will produce different designs of project. You will learn to display samples in a portfolio for reference.

Course aim

Develop the skills to measure, use patterns, manage fabric and a sewing machine to create samples and personal dress-making projects, such as a dress, blouse, trousers, or headscarf.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • work safely and effectively using a sewing machine and accessories
  • know the functions, controls and features on a sewing machine
  • know the characteristics of materials required to make samples
  • produce samples using a sewing machine

Students pay £20 to the tutor for materials and equipment. Please bring a folder to keep handouts and samples for presentation.

Enrolment Conditions

This course is funded by the Greater London Combined Authority but is also open to residents of other areas.
