Poetry of the Second World War

A more geographically mobile war than the First World War, we will explore the how poets dealt with the conflict as combatants, surveyed civilian losses and reacted to the philosophical turmoil created by the Holocaust.

Course aim

This course will examine the poetry of Auden, Keith Douglas, Alun Lewis, Paul Celan and a selection of poems from other writers across Europe.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • You will be able to discuss how poetry changed during the conflict and reacted to civilian trauma.
  • You will be able to comment on Adorno's phrase that after Auschwitz poetry is impossible.
  • You will be able to trace the development of Auden's 'age of anxiety.'
  • You will be able to describe non-British reactions to the war and its aftermath.
