An Introduction to World Cinema

We will consider a wide range of films from American and European classics to contemporary cinema in other national cinemas. This will be an opportunity to discuss the style and meaning of extracts from Shoot the Pianist to Taxi Tehran We will consider elements of film form including the screenplay and cinematography. The class will also involve reflecting on the contexts in which the films were made and different responses from audiences and critics. This is a course for everyone who enjoys cinema and would like to share ideas about a diverse selection of movies.

Course aim

This course will provide an opportunity to sample part of a longer course on World Cinema starting in the Autumn.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and for all other levels, including advanced students.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • to identify and discuss relevant elements of film style.
  • to discuss in greater detail the role of screenplay and cinematography.
  • to discuss in greater detail relevant contexts for the films selected.
  • to relate the films to key concepts from film theory.

This course is funded by the Greater London Combined Authority but is also open to residents of other areas.
