When we think about the Impressionists, the names of Monet and Renoir may come to mind first, and maybe then Pissarro, Sisley, and Degas. It is only recently that the significant contribution to the Impressionist movement of women artists such as Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt has been reassessed, showing that both painters were no "secondary" figures. Berthe Morisot, for instance, participated in all but one of the group exhibitions between 1874 and 1886. And Mary Cassatt was a driving force behind the early collecting of Impressionist painting in the United States. In this lecture we will come back on their lives and careers and see how they managed to become professional painters despite a number of obstacles. This will allow us to understand better the Parisian art world and the place of women within it during the second half of the 19th century.

Course aim
