This course will focus on Akala's book, 'Natives', with the aim of exploring together, the author's mindset. It is hoped that as a result of reading, discussing, debating and sharing, all participants will find their individual voices in some way or form and go away with added confidence to further explore the impact of race, class and identity on individuals and society as a whole.

Course aim

This course, Reading Between the Lines: Introducing 'Natives' by Akala, aims to enable participants to explore and engage with the author's mindset; creating an environment of mutual respect, companionship and learning.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • read, learn and share together with others.
  • obtain a deeper understanding of reading contents.
  • gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of others' experiences.
  • apply reading strategies and techniques that explore the mindset of authors.
  • gain new perspectives that will challenge my future reading and find my own voice.
