Castles, Homes, Palaces-historic buildings in South East England (2)

Ref: C2422667

The historic buildings of Southeast England are testament to its history and also a gateway to explore that history in all its facets. This course aims to survey eighteen of them. It will take in the grand and well-known and the humble and overlooked. It will range from military installation to aristocratic home - with some being both and more. The course will allow us to roam far and wide historically considering the changing role of buildings from the middle ages to modern times. The place of these buildings in our island story will be examined using primary sources, contemporary illustrations, historical and archaeological interpretations and my own visits to the sites. We will discuss a range of castles: Leeds, Hever, Lullingstone, Bodiam, Dover, Scotney and Eynsford. Palaces considered are Greenwich, Eltham and the Palace of the Bishops of Winchester, Southwark. We will also study a range of great houses such as Chartwell, Ightam Mote, Chiddingstone and Penshurst Place.

Course aim

This course (2/2) will take one historic building of Southeast England each week and investigate its origin, nature and development through history. This will allow us to range far and wide in terms of historical events, figures, trends and evidence
