Films from the Middle East have burst onto European screens in recent years. Often reflecting the historic, political and social upheavals of the region, challenging perceptions and telling the personal stories behind the headlines, they give us a chance to experience new cinematic voices and perspectives and engage with the art and culture of a region that we often only hear bad news about.
Course aim
An introduction to films made in the Middle East, and to Middle Eastern directors. The focus will be on recent films, but with taking account of the cinema histories of the region.

- relate the films to their historic, political and cultural context
- confidently discuss films in a small group
- practise film analysis
