Communication is a skill which you can develop and improve and this course will take you on a journey to refine your skills resulting in making a positive impact to yourself and others around you in a professional and personal context. You will develop an awareness of how to positively communicate face to face and virtually, gain an understanding of how to control your communication skills in order to be more effective, recognise different behavioural styles, appreciate the need of verbal adaptability and understand how to adjust your verbal communication style to interact successfully with others. You will gain an understanding of communication errors and how to prevent them. This course is targeted at learners who want to maximise the impact of their communication skills so that they are able to reach their full potential and work towards achieving their aspirations and goals in a work/non-work environment.

Course aim

This course will examine characteristics of an effective communicator, how speech can be adapted to differing situations and how verbal communication can be tailored to influence you in achieving your preferred outcome.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Name and recognise from a given list at least three everyday barriers to effective communication and identify at least three ways of how you can overcome them.
  • Be able to in at least one sentence explain the term 'code switching' and it's impact, provide at least two examples of when you 'code switch'. Identify own speech pattern, review and reflect, suggest at least two changes that you can make, trial the changes within a given time frame and review, share your findings with your peers.
  • You will be able to give at least three examples of how to demonstrate active listening. You can further extend by demonstrating active listening skills.
  • Be able to identify and apply effective verbal communication strategies and techniques in a range of given simulated situations.
  • You will be able to explain in at least one/two sentences what unconscious communication is and how this can impact on your verbal communication style and it's impact in a professional/personal context.
