More British Prime Ministers

This 8 week course will give you the opportunity to assess the achievements of British Prime Ministers between 1979 and 2019. You will do this in a variety of ways using imagery, historical sources and resources made specifically for the course. A range of activities (such as quizzes, accessing documents, watching short videos and whole class discussion will help you become engaged in a way that best suits you. You will be encouraged to chat and work with the other students in the group and to identify the "best minister" regardless of your political persuasion.

Course aim

To provide an opportunity to develop a good knowledge of British Prime Ministers between 1979 and 2019, to assess their respective achievements with a view to determine who was most outstanding during the period covered.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss the economic and social situation associated with the different Prime Ministers which are studied between 1979 and 2019
  • Assess and discuss a range of historical sources such as written documents, statistical information and visual sources
  • Judge the Prime Ministers of Great Britain between 1979 and 2019 using criteria drawn up by yourself and your peers
  • Name the Prime Ministers of Great Britain and the political parties they represented during the years studied.
  • Use the criteria developed, to ascertain if there is an overall Best Minister

You don't need to bring anything to this course except an interest in political history and an enthusiasm to learn about Prime Ministers between 1979 and 2019. Suggested reading and tasks will be made but these are not compulsory. Your knowledge will be developed and extended during the course.
