Thinking: Male? Female? Neither? Both? with Bettina Lange

Ref: C2346712

Gender identity has become a contested issue in recent years. This short meeting is an opportunity to reflect on one aspect: the question of whether men and women think in different ways. It has been assumed or asserted in Western culture that men's thinking is more logical, abstract and ego-centred and women's more intuitive, socially aware and other-centred. The meaning, plausibility and consequences of these ideas will be examined. This will include the issue of whether male and female thinking styles are best thought of as related to biological or to social differences. Students will be encouraged to evaluate the different positions presented and to give reasons for their conclusions. The focus will be on engaging with the arguments rather than on defending or challenging any particular position. The format will be a combination of student participation and a mini-lecture. Knowledge of philosophy is not expected.
