Chinese Brush Painting

Chinese Brush Painting is a delightful technique of painting where you do not use Western conventions of perspective and proportion. Through the use of simple brush strokes based on Chinese calligraphy one can create flowers, birds and landscapes. Further subjects may be explored if there is sufficient interest.

Course aim

To enable beginners and improvers to try out Chinese brush painting techniques through the use of traditional Chinese painting materials and techniques.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain the different types of brushes and the marks and shapes each can make.
  • Increase knowledge of types of colours both western and Chinese and how they are used in painting in general.
  • Explore the subject matter types that are used in Chinese painting.
  • Demonstrate the basic calligraphy brush stokes so that you can write, subject name and the year on a painting.
  • Investigate some of the most popular types of composition to be used in Chinese painting

No previous experience is required but it does help if you bring what Chinese painting materials you do already have to the class.. If you are not able to get hold of any Chinese items please look at for more information about suppliers on line and kit from the society.
