Screen Printing using food colour, dye and acrylic paint

Come and join our friendly group and explore screen printmaking techniques whether you are a beginner or more experienced. Learn how to collect and develop ideas for printmaking by looking at the work of other artists. Develop ways of using food colours , fountain pen inks and acrylic paint. We will take inspiration from Astrid Wilson, Mark Rothko, Howard Hodgkin, Helen Frankenthaler, Astrid Wilson, Ivon Hitchens and Georgia O'Keeffe. There will be supportive visual resources , in the form of videos and PDF documents . A full list of materials will be provided with a close eye on cost . For example , I use window cleaning squeegees costing £1 from my local  Wilco store, food colours from cake shops . Screens can be obtained from https://huntthemoon.co.uk/    

Course aim

Course aims This is an experimental course exploring the huge potential of screen printing ,using materials found in your home. For example fountain pen ink, food colours and acrylic paint . The course is suitable for textile and fine art work.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Collect images that inspire you and that you’d like to use in your work .for example look at the work of 
Astrid Wilson ,https://astridwilson.com/ or Clarice cliff (vibrant colour /simple shapes) or Ivon Hitchins (wonderful gestural brush, marks and colour).
  • Develop an awareness of design , mark-making colour and composition .
  • Experiment with food colours and fountain pen ink . Initially on cartridge paper to explore the potential of the medium and then progress to working on a screen.
  • Use both traditional and none traditional media to make printed images .
  • Print a number of images based upon your research , and knowledge printmaking media and choice of paper or fabric .
