Although online, this course will involve practical activities and very active engagement in route finding around a virtual hike. It will fit you with plenty of skills that you can go out and practise soon afterwards.

Course aim

We will go through the basics of map reading by taking a virtual walk through some lovely Derbyshire countryside.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Orientate a map using landscape features
  • Identify key map symbols used by walkers on an Ordnance Survey Explorer Map
  • Estimate distances on a map
  • Use a map to describe a short country walk.

You will need: Pencil Sheet A4 paper Access to a rectangular work space (eg dining table or coffee table) Two short lengths of string or wool (1 metre each) Three boxes or jars (about the size of Cooks Matches / jam jar)
