This course is designed to take students through the pottery process working with earthenware clay and glazes. Students will learn how to shape and form clay using hand building techniques such as pinching, coiling and slabbing. Explore and use different methods of applying texture, pattern and colour to enhance the surface of the clay through the use of tools, stencils and stamps. Develop skills in applying decorative slips, wax resist, under glazes and glazes. Use of sketch books will be encouraged to support research, idea development and evaluations. Students will have opportunities to explore personal projects developing creative skills and bring ideas to life. Experience and share the excitement of the pottery process from raw clay to the fired kiln.

Course aim

To enable students to design, make and decorate hand built pottery work using earthenware clay and glaze. To create a personal response to working with clay. To develop self esteem, confidence and personal skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe what is meant by leather hard clay
  • Show how and when to apply decorative slips
  • Explain the differences between underglazes and glazes and at what stage to apply them to clay
  • Demonstrate the use of wax resist and stencils as a method of decorating the clay surface
  • Select and demonstrate appropriate clay construction techniques in the development of your ideas

Fee paying students would be asked to pay £12 for materials at the time of enrolling. Could you please bring to the sessions a suitable apron to wear for working with clay. Students may wish to bring their own tools and personal imagery/sketch book to work from.
