Art and Writing with Deborah Tyler-Bennett

Ref: C2346525

Visual art about people can inspire creative writing concerning character. Poet and writer Deborah Tyler-Bennett has devised this course of creative writing workshops based on decades of work for National museums including the Victoria-and-Albert Museum, for whom she co-wrote creative writing web pages, and sessions at Keats House, Hampstead, the Wellcome Collection, and New York University students hosted at the National Gallery. The course looks at using painters of people, such as Hogarth, to create work in poetry and prose.

Course aim

This course is meant to draw links between visual art and writing, using images by William Hogarth and others to inspire creative work in both poetry and prose. It is taught by a published writer who has worked for National galleries and museums.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • Do bring along any writing previously done using art as inspiration.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe how texture in visual art can be used to create poetic imagery.
  • Explain the uses of colour (or lack of it) in creative writing, and apply colour and tone to passages of work.
  • Indicate and define the uses of light and shade in portraiture, and state how these could also be employed in poetry and prose.
  • Describe how some Hogarth faces (such as those of his servants) are pared down to their expressions and evaluate how such paring down to essence can be used in writing.
  • Evaluate how polishing techniques can aid the drafts created early in the course, and how cutting can be applied long after a work's first draft.
