As a writer your aim is not just to tell a story but to captivate a reader. In order to achieve that you goal you must paint a visual scene and immerse the reader. This can so often feel like a chore leading to description that feels dry and repetitive to the reader and tedious for the writer to list. This short course takes us back to the basics of descriptive writing, how we might define it, how we should approach it, and how we can practise it with confidence and inspiration. From humanist and writing perspectives we will discuss, observe, and explore how to delicately prod at the minds of our audience to engage their imagination and manipulate their emotions. We will see how using literary devices and writing stylistics can be effectively utilised in a balanced way to suit the mood and function of the piece and the intentions of the author. This course will feature lecture, discussion, excerpts, and exercises to help you give people the right impression!

Course aim

In relation primarily to creative fiction, this short course explores basic descriptive writing techniques to engage and immerse the reader.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Define 'descriptive writing' and identify its limitations
  • Demonstrate usage of the 'five sense test' in situations both familiar & unfamiliar
  • Practise 'imagery' and other literary devices in at least 1 piece of writing
  • Explain how a difference in style & function may affect a piece of writing
