The Establishment of the State of Israel: Balfour to Black September

Ref: C2346515

My hope is that the course will bring the big picture of what is widely considered to be the world's most intractable and divisive conflict onto sharper focus. The following themes will be considered: - The Jewish and Arab claims to Palestine - The secret diplomacy during the First World War and the Balfour Declaration - The League of Nations mandates in the Middle East - British rule in Palestine 1919-1039 - How the Second World War and the Holocaust influenced Zionism - The creation of Israel and the 1948 war - Arab-Israeli wars between 1956-1973 and the spread of terrorism

Course aim

The course focuses on the conflict in the Middle East through a study of the relationship between Arabs and Jews in Palestine between 1917 and 1973. From Balfour to Black September.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • The course is for anyone with an interest in a troubling and controversial topic which continues to reverberate in the 21st Century world.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify and distinguish the competing historical claims of the Jews and Arabs to Palestine
  • Recognize and question the effect of the League of Nations mandates in the Middle East
  • Analyse and evaluate the British rule in Palestine from 1919-1947
  • Interpret how the Second World War and the Holocaust influenced Zionism and exacerbated conflict in Palestine
  • Determine how the events of 1947-8 in Palestine led to the emergence of the PLO and the spread of international terrorism in the form of Black September

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

Some background knowledge on antisemitism would be useful but not essential. The most essential quality is to be open minded and willing to discuss and debate some challenging issues.
